Barbara Dixon Ryan is an author, lawyer, substance use disorder counselor and peer recovery specialist. In her latest book, When Someone You Love is Addicted to Something You Hate, she explains how poor choices lead to organic brain changes that often necessitate a different strategy. Words alone rarely work.

Lee Spencer, MD, graduated from medical school at Tulane University School. Board Certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry, he trained at John Hopkins Hospital and UT Southwestern. Dr. Spencer specializes in the treatment of addictions, as well as all forms of mental illness. He prefers a comprehensive, bottom-up, holistic approach to treatment. Most mental illnesses are far too complex and varied to be treated solely with medication - though that is often a necessary part of the total treatment. He has a passion for and expertise in treating substance use disorders, including alcohol use disorders, as well as opioid, stimulant, sedative, hallucinogen, and dissociative use disorders.
